MedicX held a groundbreaking event this November to celebrate the start of construction of a new medical centre for East Cowes. The modern, purpose-built centre, located on the recently complted Town Square was developed by MedicX in partnership with NHS Isle of Wight and is the latest phase in the regeneration of the former GKN Works at East Cowes. The scheme was brought forward by a number of local partners, including NHS Isle of Wight, the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), to offer a centralised location for local doctors and staff to provide an improved service for patients and the local community. The site transferred from SEEDA to the HCA in September, and the agency will use its experience of managing regeneration projects to continue to support local partners.

When complete, Dr Andrews & Partners GP Practice in York Avenue will relocate to the new centre, which will also house PCT dental services, podiatry, a local district nurse team as well as various PCT-led clinics and a new pharmacy.

Paul Chandler, Head of Development, MedicX, said: “MedicX is currently developing a number of schemes in London and the South East, bringing an innovative range of healthcare services to local communities. East Cowes is just one example of how our expertise is ensuring that modern, purpose-built healthcare centres are being delivered on time and within budget. We are now focussed on maintaining the momentum to open the medical centre in July 2012.”

Nick Emery, Practice Manager, Dr Andrews & Partners GP Practice, commented: “It is really exciting being on site and seing how much progress has already been made. This is a very positive step for East Cowes that will provide a purpose-built health centre for the future, which is capable of delivering a whole range of expanded services, in direct response to local demand. Without the partnership with MedicX this project would not have been possible and we look forward to moving in next year.”

Paul Flatt, HCA senior development manager, added: “This marks another important step in our work to develop East Cowes as a great place to live, work and visit. the HCA is committed to the regeneration of East Cowes and has invested substantially with patients in the delivery of infrastructure, new homes and regeneration over the past 10 years. The project demonstrates the close relationship we have with our partners and I am pleased that work has started on this important and exciting project for the town.”

Bilborough’s new Grange Farm Medical Centre, located in state-of-the-art premises on Tremayne Road, Nottingham celebrated milestone. The MedicX developed centre, occupied by Dr Helen Hollis, Dr Nina Ray and Dr Nadeem Sarwar reached 1,000 patients, having opened their doors to NHS patients in March 2011.

To celebrate their success, the practice asked their 1,000th patient to formally open the centre at an unveiling party. All patients and staff were presented with an open invitation to the event; providing food, drink, face painting for children and games such as bingo. Over 100 patients and staff attended the event, enjoying activities laid on and leaving comments to the MedicX team as to how impressed they were with the building and facilities.

Kylie Walls, the lucky 1,000th patient, who runs a local slimming world club commented:

“It was an honor to officially open the Grange Farm Medical Centre as the 1,000th patient. The facilities are fantastic and offer the community exactly what we need.”

Emma Bravery, Managing Partner, Grange Farm Medical Centre:

“It is our aim to make this fantastic facility part of the local community, not just a doctor’s surgery. The turn out for our official opening highlights that residents have embraced the new centre and we look forward to providing even more community focused events in the future.”

Jemma Whetton, Development Manager, MedicX:

“Seeing the new medical facilities providing patients with much improved NHS and community services in Bilborough is fantastic. The sign-up of the 1,000th patient is testament as to how hard the practice has worked since taking occupancy in the centre back in March.”

Grange Farm Medical Centre offers patients a large waiting room, baby feed and change facilities, 9 clinical rooms and a large Health Education room. Appointments are available throughout the day, including late night on Wednesdays, whilst recently expanded services include a new drop-in GP clinic and a nurse-led minor illness clinic.

Success in second round fund raising results in £55 million raised from new and exisiting investors.

The fundraising, completed on 28 September, follows an initial £45 million equity raising for the fund in August last year. The £55 million second close was raised from a number of the original investors, which include BNP Paribas REIM on behalf of National Grid UK Pension Scheme, Henderson Global Investors, Merseyside Pension Fund and Prudential. The latest investment round also attracted the involvement of Schroders for the first time.

The Healthfund has so far acquired a selection of care properties, though MedicX said it will target a wide range of healthcare investments including specialist-care, private hospitals and diagnostic clinics.

The Healthfund was launched last year to complement the LSE-listed MedicX Fund, which invests in primary care premises, as well as to take advantage of the coalition’s NHS reforms.

Mike Adams, Chief Executive Officer, MedicX:

“The coalition government’s agenda is to liberate the NHS, focusing on improvement in quality and healthcare outcomes to the benefit of the patient. The increasing demand for healthcare services coupled with the provision of new facilities, underpin very attractive investments opportunities in this rapidly growing sector”.

Corby Glen’s new purpose built 485m2 Market Cross Surgery development celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony this week.

All of the medical staff at the Market Cross Surgery attended the event, to see the visionary development begin major steps in the construction process. The new surgery will offer patients of the local community five consulting rooms, treatment/minor injuries room and a room for minor surgery, whilst also providing accommodation for the community nursing team and Health Visitors.

Jemma Whetton, Development Manager, MedicX:

“Cutting the first turf is always a momentous occasion, but to the new Market Cross Surgery, it’s a particularly big event and a long-time coming. It was fantastic to show the medical staff this stage of development; they really embraced this opportunity and are looking forward to the opening in Spring 2012.”

Dr John Elder, Market Cross Surgery:

“We’re absolutely delighted to have, at last, started the new development for the Market Cross Surgery. Thank you to Councillor Hill, Corby Glen Parish Council, NHS Lincolnshire and Jemma from MedicX for their all their help and support. This will be a very positive step for both our patients and our staff. “

Nick Overton, LCHS working on behalf of Lincolnshire PCT:

“It’s been a long time in the making but the cutting of the turf marks the start of the final stretch for Market Cross Surgery. We will now physically see the structure emerge from the ground to ultimately produce new premises for Dr Elder and his team. The accommodation will be of high quality to provide services fit for the 21st Century”

The new site is adjacent to the Charles Read Academy, with all works set to be completed in Spring 2012.
